syllogism

n. A form of deductive reasoning in which a major and a minor proposition assumed to be true are used to reach a conclusion, as in “All men are mortal. Bob is a man. Therefore Bob is mortal.” There are 256 possible forms of syllogism, and only 24 are held to be true in the field of logic.
