Thorndike puzzle box

n. A locked container in which an animal is placed which has an unlocking mechanism the animal must manipulate either to get a reward or to get out of the box. The difficulty of the unlocking mechanism can be varied to create tasks of greater and lesser difficulty. Invented by Edward Thorndike to study animal learning.
