identity crisis
n. A state of uncertainty about one’s role, purpose, and meaning in life which is typical of adolescence and tends to resolve in late adolescence or early adulthood as the individual gains a sense of place and purpose in the larger society and gains a sense of commitment to social and sexual roles. In some individuals the crisis continues throughout adulthood, preventing them from settling into identification with particular adult social roles.
