phrenology

n. An archaic theory in which the shape of the skull was associated with personality and various abilities. It supposed that different brain areas governed different characteristics and abilities, and those that were strongest in a person would cause the skull to bulge outward while growing so that the resulting bumps indicated the strength of the ability or characteristic associated with the part of the brain beneath it.
