n. Hearing loss caused by damage to or deterioration of the inner ear or any part of the auditory nerve tract. The most common causes are breaking and death of hair cells within the cochlea by exposure to loud noises, overexposure to drugs such as aspirin and quinine, mumps, rubella, and tumors. Also called sensorineural deafness.
