schizophrenia, paranoid

n. A form of psychosis characterized by prominent bizarre delusions or auditory and other hallucinations with a relatively normal cognitive and affective functioning. Delusions are usually persecutory and grandiose, but other types may occur. Persons with this disorder exhibit emotions appropriate to their irrational beliefs about the world and so are often anxious, angry, and aloof and argue strenuously for the reality of their bizarre delusions. Marked social and occupational dysfunction is often present but less often than in other forms of schizophrenia.
