thalamus
n. Either of a pair of golf-ball-size hemispheres of gray matter in the diencephalon, below the cortex and forming the lateral walls of the third ventricle. It contains all of the nerve pathways between the cerebral cortex and the spinal cord as well as numerous nuclei for sensory, motor, visual, somatosensory, autonomic, and associative processes.
