primary reinforcement

n. A stimulus which increases the likelihood that an act immediately prior to the stimulus will increase in frequency and which seems not to have been acquired by learning but to be innate to the organism. As contrasted to a secondary reinforcement, which does not initially increase the likelihood of an act that precedes it but does so after having been paired with a primary reinforcement.
