filter theory
n. 1. A description of mate selection in which possible mates are ruled out in a stepwise fashion until only one is left. 2. An early information processing model of attention which suggested that unattended channels of information were stopped by a cognitive filter allowing focus on a single channel, which was quickly shown to be unworkable and has been supplanted by numerous other models such as the leaky switch and various attenuation models.
