mnemonic device
n. This is simply a strategy for enhancing memory. There are many different types of mnemonic devices. On example is imagery mnemonics. When one uses this strategy, he or she associates the information to be memorized with an image. For example, if being asked to memorize words, the individual creates a bizarre or memorable image he/she can associate with the word. Another example of this is called verbal elaboration. Here, when given pairs of words to memorize, one can create a sentence with both words that also creates an image. (e.g., when given the words turkey and rock, the individual thinks, "The turkey sat on the rock"). Another example of a mnemonic device is an acronym. Perhaps the most well known acronym is related to the lines of the treble staff, EGBDF. In order to remember the order of the letters, several phrases have been developed such as "Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge." These are just a few examples of the many different strategies that exist.
