partial reinforcement

n. An instrumental conditioning technique in which only some appropriate responses are rewarded, usually following either a ratio or interval schedule. Partial reinforcement is associated with more difficulty in establishing a response but more resistance to extinction when the response is no longer rewarded. Also called intermittent reinforcement.
