n. An index of the degree to which a test measures what it is intended to measure, as opposed to extraneous variables and random error. A test-criterion correlation coefficient is the most commonly used and important of these. In cases in which a theoretical single dimension is being measured, coefficient alpha can be used as a measure of validity.
