A classification system for describing odors in which there are nine primary odors, ethereal, aromatic, fragrant, ambrosiac, allaceous, empyreumatic, hircine, foul, and nauseous, which were hypothesized to serve as the basis for all odors as the primary colors combine to form all the hues humans can perceive.
