race bias in testing
n. Concerns about race bias in testing are centered on the fact that specific ethnic groups consistently obtain lower average scores on traditional intelligence tests (as well as some other psychological tests). The differential scores have been attributed to environmental (i.e., education and schooling) and biological (i.e., genetic) factors as well as test bias as a result of inclusion of test questions that rely on specific cultural knowledge or language. Concerns over race bias in testing have led to the creation of various legal standards (i.e., the Civil Rights Act, which created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission [EEOC]) for guiding the use of psychological testing. – BJM
