temporal summation

n. A process characteristic of sensory neurons in which a subthreshold postsynaptic potential lasts long enough for one or more subsequent potentials to add to its effect, thus creating a depolarization sufficient to propagate down the axon, causing the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft which affect postsynaptic cells.
