An eating disorder of infancy and early childhood in which the child preferentially seeks out and eats specific nonnutritive substances such as dirt, hair, paint, plaster, or starch which may be due to calcium deficiency and can lead to poisoning such as lead poisoning if the child ingests lead-based paint or other toxic materials.
