basilar membrane

n. The fibrous membrane on the organ of Corti in the inner ear, which vibrates with changes in air pressure waves, stimulating the hair cells inside the organ of Corti, which send impulses toward the auditory cortex. Different sound frequencies cause the membrane to swell at different points along its approximate 34-mm length, and the points of maximal swelling determine the pitch of the sound heard.
