discontinuous variable

n. A variable which for certain values or between certain values of the variable does not vary continuously as the variable increases. The discontinuity may consist of an abrupt change in the value of the function, or an abrupt change in its law of variation, or the variable may not exist or may become imaginary within some ranges, such as the number of professional football teams which have won more than 200 games in one season.
