n. An approach to understanding the acquisition of behaviors in which it is presumed that behavior occurs as a response to a stimulus. In classical conditioning, the learning is a connection between a particular response and a novel stimulus associated with an unconditioned stimulus. In instrumental conditioning, it is between a discriminative stimulus and the response.
