adenine

n. One of four bases which compose all deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA), which are the chemical building blocks of genetic inheritance and body functioning (C5H5N5). Adenine also is a component of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which stores energy in the mitochondria of cells, and of adenosine diphosphate (ADP).
