n. 1. Generally the size, amount, extent, or magnitude; it is frequently used in describing waves, as in sound. 2. In describing waves the displacement from a zero point as in an ocean wave whose amplitude is 4 feet above and below the average level of the water. 3. The maximal displacement of a periodic wave.
