projective identification

n. In Kleinian analysis, a defensive fantasy in which an individual imagines part of himself/herself is split off and injected into an object, thus allowing the individual to control or harm it and so give the individual the illusion of control. This is similar to Sigmund Freud's ideas of the function of religion and people's beliefs about God.
