An understanding derived neither from conscious reasoning nor in any obvious way from perception that is accurate, as in the linguistic notion of linguistic competence, in which native speakers are able to use correct grammar but often are unable to say what rules are involved in doing so, why it is grammatically correct, or how they arrived at that particular structure of speech. 2. The capacity to understand in a holistic way without using conscious reasoning and going beyond obvious perceptual characteristics.
