n. The process of obtaining more information about other people or events through observation and communication as a means of improving ability to predict and explain their behavior or outcomes. Uncertainty reduction theory supposes that initial relationships between individuals are more rule governed and used to gain information about the other person which reduces the anxiety associated with uncertainty. This allows the people to relax and enter a more personal phase of relationship in which their communication and behavior are less rule governed.
