paralanguage

n. The nonverbal aspects of oral communication including tone, voice quality, timing, loudness, inflection, and nonword noises such as hisses, hems and haws, sighs, whistles, grunts, and groans. The paralanguage has a large influence on the meaning of the verbal aspects of language and can reverse the meaning of words as in the case of sarcasm or contain most or all of the meaning of an utterance.
