silent pause

n. A moment in an ongoing conversation during which no party speaks. The meaning and usage of silent pauses vary considerably among language cultures and subcultures. In some it is taken as a sign of weakness and in others as a sign of strength or wisdom; it can be used as a sign of agreement or disagreement and many other things.
