taste cell

n. Any of about 350,000 neuroreceptor cells in the mouth, throat, or larynx which convert certain chemicals dissolved in liquid into a sensation of sweet, sour, bitter, or salt, depending on the type of taste cell. Each kind of taste cell acts to inhibit the impulses from other types of cells. The number of these cells varies widely among individuals and declines with age.
