n. A numerical index of the degree to which a test measures what it is intended to measure, as opposed to reflecting extraneous variables and random error. A test-criterion correlation coefficient is the most usual and important coefficient. In cases in which a theoretical single dimension is being measured, the coefficient alpha can be used as a measure of validity.
