rod
n. An elongated kind of light receptor cell in the back of the retina which is concentrated in the periphery of the visual field and responds to low light levels and so is most important in night vision. Rods contain a chemical called rhodopsin, which changes shape when struck by a photon of appropriate energy, thus triggering an electrical impulse, which is carried from the rod cell to neurons and other nearby rods.
