striate cortex
n. Primary visual area (V1) located in the calcarine fissure of the occipital lobe (Brodmann's area 17). It receives information from the lateral geniculate body of the thalamus through the optic radiation. The different points of the primary visual area clearly correspond to specific segments in the retina (retinotopic organization). Damage in the right or left primary visual area results in contralateral hemianopia. Complete, bilateral lesions of the occipital lobes produce cortical blindness. – AA
