dark adaptation

n. An increased sensitivity to light caused by the expansion of the pupils and the replacement of rhodopsin, the photosensitive pigment in the retinal rods, which is normally depleted by continuous exposure to light.

Dark adaptation depends on previous level of exposure to light but is usually complete in about 20-30 minutes in complete dark.
