selfish gene

n. A way of describing individual genes as if they were self-interested in competition with other genes for replication and multiplication. This simplification of natural selection ignores organism and population levels of 
selection, in which large groups of genes are simultaneously selected, and the dependence of some genes on others for their biological utility.
