Any mental illness that involves an irrational and persistent fear of a particular thing, event, or situation which is extreme enough to bother the individual and often leads to irrational acts of avoidance. This is common in anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessivecompulsive disorder, and social anxiety disorder and is sometimes present in psychotic disturbances.
