papilla

n. Any small biological projection, such as those on the tongue, including the vallate papillae, the fungiform papillae, and the folliate papillae, which contain taste buds at their bases, as well as the filiform papillae, which do not contain taste buds. There are also papillae on the skin, at the base of a hair 
or the root of a feather, or around the base of a new tooth. A pimple or blister can be considered a papilla, and there are interdental papillae, the part of gingiva located between teeth, and in the kidney, inside the cheek, on or around the nipple, and on the eyelid around the inner corner of the eyes as well.
