sudden infant death syndrome

n. (SIDS) The sudden and unexpected death of a healthy infant for no apparent reason. There is no certain cause, although sleep apnea has been blamed and low-birth-weight and premature babies are somewhat more susceptible than full-term and normal-weight babies. Also called crib death.
