unconscious inference
n. The supposition that perception is influenced by conclusions about sensory data using the perceiver's general knowledge of the world and previous experience with similar sensory information. Thus, when we see a common cat up close we judge it to be smaller than a lion viewed at a distance even though the light reflected from the nearby cat casts a larger image on our eye than does the distant lion.
