n. A cognitive evaluation of a situation or event relative to the needs of the organism. In cognitive theories of emotion, appraisal is a central event in determining emotional response. Primary appraisal is an evaluation of the situation or event itself, and secondary appraisal takes into account one’s coping resources and efforts in the evaluation and emotional response.
