sociolinguistics
n. The field of study which examines interaction between social factors and language form and use, especially as related to social class, status, age, gender, and ethnic group, using techniques borrowed from both linguistics and sociology. It studies how the language an individual uses changes depending upon the person he/she is speaking to and how groups use language differently, including developing their versions of the base language or mixtures of language among groups with more than one language.
