natural category

n. Any category that occurs in natural language or folk usage, as opposed to ad hoc categories or those constructed during scientific, technological, philosophical, or religious practices. This is sometimes confused with basic level categories, which are those categories that occur first in the development of natural languages and at which there is the most similarity within categories and the most dissimilarity between categories.
