intelligence test

n. Any test that claims to measure general abilities or capacity to learn. The best known intelligence tests are the Wechsler scales of intelligence and the Stanford-Binet intelligence test. Both are individually administered tests which measure a variety of skills and make inferences about likely educational achievement and capacities to learn. Many shorter intelligence tests exist, many of which may be administered in groups. A limitation of all intelligence tests has been the problem of separating exposure to different learning conditions, including different cultures and languages, from innate ability. Attempts to develop culture- fair or culture-free tests such as the Raven Progressive Matrices test have been only marginally successful.
