mutation

n. Any permanent change in the genetic information encoded in the DNA of a cell capable of being transmitted to offspring cells or, in the case of mutation in a sex cell, transmission to the next generation of organisms. Mutation is the process by which species change over time as some of the mutations produce offspring that are better adapted for survival in the particular environment in which the organism lives and so increase the chance individuals with that genetic form will survive and procreate.
