n. Proteins in cell membranes that conduct sodium ions through a cell's plasma membrane. In excitable cells such as neurons, sodium channels are responsible for the rising phase of action potentials as they change permeability and allow the exchange of sodium and potassium ions, which causes the waves of electricity that flow down the neuron.
