In Piagetian psychology, either of the stages of intellectual development in which the child is able to represent a problem mentally and carry out mental tests of different approaches to the problem. The stage of concrete operations runs from about 7 to 11 years of age, and the stage of formal operations begins at about 12 years 
of age and is characteristic of adult thought.
