visual accommodation
n. The process of tightening and relaxing the ciliary muscles, which changes the shape of the lens in the eye to allow the image of an object of focus to be sharpened on the retina. Tightening the muscles flattens the lens so that the images of distant objects become clearer, while relaxing the muscles thickens the lens so that the images of near objects become sharper.
