self-consciousness

n. 1. Excessive focus on the self and its characteristics from an observer's perspective in social situations, usually with a high degree of self-criticism, anxiety, and a tendency to panic along with a disruption in normal capacity to think clearly. 2. The characteristic of thinking about one's self and one's attributes, including mental processes and other 
private experiences as well as public aspects of the self.
