neuroendocrinology

n. A scientific discipline which investigates the interaction of the central nervous system (CNS) and the autonomic nervous system (ANS) with the secretion of glandular hormones. Neurons in the CNS interact with the endocrine system via the pituitary gland, which directs the activity of the endocrine system. The pituitary gland and the parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions of the ANS respond to stimulation from the hypothalamus, regulator of homeostasis, and then signal the endocrine glands to increase or decrease hormonal output. When neuroendocrinologists study psychological stimulation such as emotional stress or pleasure, the term psychoneuroendocrinology is used. – VS
