Mach band

n. An illusion that appears when the edges of a light gray and a dark gray patch are placed together such that on the dark gray patch there appears to be a strip of even darker gray along the edge, and along the lighter gray patch there appears to be an even lighter gray strip along the edge so that the contrast between the two is heightened.
