ion
n. A charged particle that is often attached to an ion of an equal and opposite charge to form a molecule. Cations have positive charges and anions have negative charges. When a molecule splits to form ions, part of the molecule retains one or more extra electrons, giving it a negative charge and causing it to become an anion, while the other part surrenders one or more electrons and so becomes a positively charged cation.
