organ of Corti

n. A liquid-filled chamber within the cochlea in the inner ear which contains hair cells which generate nerve impulses in reaction to sound. There are 15,000–20,000 hair cells which react as waves of pressure moves across their area; the length of the waves determines the pitch of the sound.
