politeness theory

n. The scientific investigation of the observance and nonobservance of accepted social patterns and especially patterns of linguistic interaction within and between cultures and subcultures. These ideas are generally associated with the idea of face or public self-image and are variable among cultures, subcultures, and individuals of different status and familiarity.
